A Practical Guide to Using Claude (Anthropic's AI) in Your Business

Jeffrey T. Furtado · Managing Partner, PreciseHRApril 27, 20268 min read

Where Claude actually helps, how to prompt it so the output is genuinely useful, and the workflow habits that separate teams getting real leverage from those just playing with a chatbot.

Treat it like a sharp junior colleague, not a search engine

The biggest mistake people make with Claude is typing one-line questions and judging it on the answer. It's a reasoning engine, not a lookup tool. Give it a role, the context, and the goal — "You're an HR advisor; here's the policy and the situation; draft a response" — and the quality jumps immediately.

Context is everything

The single biggest lever on output quality is how much relevant context you give it. Paste the real document, the actual data, the example you're working from. A model working from a vague description produces vague work; a model working from your source material produces something you can use.

Be specific about the output you want

Don't just describe the task — describe the deliverable. Who's the audience, what format, how long, what tone, what to include and leave out. "Summarize this" is weak; "Give me a five-bullet summary for a busy executive, lead with the decision needed" gets you something usable on the first pass.

Iterate — don't expect one perfect shot

Treat it as a working conversation, not a vending machine. The first draft is a starting point; tell it what to change. "Make it shorter, more direct, and add a line about timing" will get you there faster than rewriting your original prompt from scratch.

Show, don't just tell

Examples beat instructions every time. If you want an email in your voice, paste one you've written. If you want a report in a specific structure, give it a past one to match. A single good example often does more than a paragraph of directions.

Keep a human in the loop

Claude accelerates judgment — it doesn't replace it. Verify anything that matters: numbers, legal or compliance specifics, client-facing claims. You own the output. The teams that get burned are the ones that stopped reading what they shipped.

Turn what works into a repeatable workflow

The real payoff isn't a clever one-off answer — it's the same high-value task done in a fraction of the time, every week. Once a prompt works, save it and reuse it (Projects and Skills make this easy). That's where the hours actually come back.
