Which Claude Model Should You Use? Opus vs. Sonnet vs. Haiku

Anthropic ships several Claude models at different points on the speed, cost, and capability curve. Here's a simple framework for matching the right one to the job — and why defaulting to the most powerful model for everything is a costly mistake.

Think in three tiers, not version numbers

Model names and version numbers change constantly, but the structure doesn't: there's a top-tier model for hard problems, a balanced workhorse for everyday use, and a fast, cheap model for volume. Learn the tiers and you'll always know which to reach for, whatever the latest version is called.

Opus — for the hard stuff

Opus (currently Claude Opus 4.8) is the most capable tier — built for deep reasoning, complex analysis, ambiguous judgment calls, long documents, and high-stakes output where quality matters more than speed or cost. It's slower and more expensive, so use it where the difficulty genuinely warrants it.

Sonnet — the everyday workhorse

Sonnet (currently Claude Sonnet 4.6) hits the best balance of quality, speed, and cost for the bulk of day-to-day work: drafting, research, summarizing, most coding. For most people, most of the time, this is the right default.

Haiku — for speed and scale

Haiku (currently Claude Haiku 4.5) is fast and inexpensive, with the most generous usage limits. It's ideal for high-volume, lower-complexity work — classification, data extraction, routing, quick summaries — where you need throughput, not deep reasoning.

The advisor pattern

A technique worth knowing: use a powerful model to plan and a cheaper one to execute. Let Opus break down a complex task, then have Haiku or Sonnet do the repetitive parts. You keep most of the quality at a fraction of the cost — which adds up fast at scale.

How to choose in practice

Match the model to the task's complexity and volume. Default to Sonnet, reach up to Opus when a problem is genuinely hard or the stakes are high, and drop to Haiku when you're processing volume. In the Claude app you can switch models per conversation, so it costs nothing to right-size each task.
